Conocimiento de higiene bucal y su relación con el índice de higiene oral en estudiantes de la Institución Educativa Víctor Manuel Maurtua, Ica-Perú 2024

Abstract

Objetivo: Determinar la relación entre el conocimiento de higiene bucal con el índice de higiene oral en estudiantes de la Institución Educativa Víctor Manuel Maurtua, Ica-Perú 2024. Material y método: Se realizó un estudio observacional, descriptivo-correlacional, con una muestra de 304 estudiantes entre 11 y 16 años. Se utilizó un cuestionario para evaluar el conocimiento en tres dimensiones: higiene bucodental, enfermedades bucodentales y prevención. El índice de higiene oral se midió mediante el Índice Simplificado de Higiene Oral (OHI-S) de Greene y Vermillion. Los datos fueron procesados en SPSS v.26 y analizados mediante estadística descriptiva e inferencial (Rho de Spearman). Resultados: El 60,9% de los estudiantes tuvo un conocimiento regular y el 39,1% un nivel bueno. Respecto al índice de higiene oral, el 47,4% alcanzó un índice adecuado, el 46,1% regular y el 6,5% deficiente. No se encontró una relación significativa entre el conocimiento general de higiene bucal y el índice de higiene oral (p > 0,05). Sin embargo, las dimensiones de enfermedades bucodentales (p = 0,044) y prevención (p = 0,049) mostraron relaciones positivas con mejores índices de higiene. Conclusión: Las áreas específicas de conocimiento en prevención y enfermedades bucodentales están asociadas con una mejor higiene oral, destacando la necesidad de fortalecer estos temas en programas educativos dirigidos a adolescentes.

Material and method: An observational, descriptive-correlational study was carried out with a sample of 304 students between 11 and 16 years of age. A questionnaire was used to assess knowledge in three dimensions: oral hygiene, oral diseases and prevention. The oral hygiene index was measured using Greene and Vermillion's Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S). Results: The 60.9% of the students had a fair level of knowledge and 39.1% a good level. Regarding the oral hygiene index, 47.4% reached an adequate index, 46.1% regular and 6.5% deficient. No significant relationship was found between general oral hygiene knowledge and oral hygiene index (p > 0.05). However, the dimensions of oral diseases (p = 0.044) and prevention (p = 0.049) showed positive relationships with better hygiene indexes. Conclusion: Specific areas of knowledge in prevention and oral diseases are associated with improved oral hygiene, highlighting the need to strengthen these topics in educational programs aimed at adolescents.
